Learn to Speak Italian or English

Italy is known for its particularly beautiful language, which is the basis for an incredibly rich tradition of literature and song. No attempt to understand and embrace Italian culture is complete without the study of the Italian language. Toward that end, the Italian Cultural Center, Inc. provides significant opportunity to learn Italian and participate in the authentic Italian experience. In addition, we provide language skills and personal assistance to non-native English speakers [known as ESL students for whom English is a second language or LEP (limited English proficiency) business travelers].

At the foundation of any culture is its language.

Educating Educators about Italian Culture

The Italian Cultural Center supports the professional development of high school teachers of Italian language and teachers working with students for whom English is a second language throughout the state of Maryland.

  • We partner with the State of Maryland Department of Education to provide enhanced learning opportunities to teachers in the State’s growing Italian language program.
  • We supported the participation of Italian instructors in the 2005 American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language (ACTFL) Conference in Baltimore.
  • Beginning in 2006, we also became proud sponsors of many Maryland Foreign Language Association professional conferences.

Promoting Tourism and Hospitality

In addition, the Italian Cultural Center, Inc. is a financial supporter of the Hospitality, Culinary Arts & Tourism Institute of Anne Arundel Community College.

  • Our contribution to the scholarship fund permits students to participate in a ten-week International Culinary Internship on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Mentoring Musical Talent and Introducing Italian Opera to American Students

The Cultural Center brings the richness of Italian instrumental music and traditional pageantry to Maryland.

  • Together with the Baltimore Opera Company past volunteers, staff, and performers, the Italian Cultural Center has made it possible for Baltimore County middle school students to experience the joys of Opera.
  • The middle school children attend a dress rehearsal of an Italian-language opera conducted by an Italian guest conductor.
  • Our organization has co-sponsored performances by the Venetian Baroque Orchestra and the Sbandieratori San Quirico d’Orcia.
  • The Italian Cultural Center joined An Die Musik in welcoming Maestro Andrea Centazzo [famed contemporary composer and percussionist] for his first Baltimore concert.

Teaching Foreign Language Classes

The Italian Cultural Center’s own Foreign Language School runs concurrent with the academic year, offering university-level Italian language classes in small group settings with personal attention. We offer the following courses, small group classes, and private tutoring opportunities:

  • Elementary Italian I and II
  • Intermediate Italian I and II
  • Conversation & Composition I and II
  • Special Topics/Literature
  • Latin Roots (prefixes, word root, and suffix origins)

Italian Language classes are routinely held at the Bykota Center in Towson, Maryland — a central location in Baltimore County easily accessible for all of Maryland’s residents.
